Meta Reportedly Developing Humanoid Robot Hardware and AI

Meta, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, is reportedly venturing into humanoid robotics by developing both hardware and AI-powered software. According to a recent Bloomberg report, a new team within Meta’s Reality Labs division has been tasked with working on humanoid robot hardware designed to assist with household chores.

Rather than producing its own branded robots, Meta aims to build AI models, sensors, and software that can be licensed by third-party manufacturers. The company is reportedly in talks with robotics firms like Unitree Robotics and Figure AI to develop a Meta-branded humanoid. This approach mirrors what Google and Qualcomm did with Android and Snapdragon chips, respectively, in the smartphone industry.

Meta’s Robotics Strategy & Investments

Meta does not necessarily plan to sell its own robots but will focus on developing prototypes and foundational hardware for humanoid robotics. In an internal memo, Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, stated that the company’s existing technologies in Reality Labs and AI are well-aligned with advancements in robotics.

The humanoid robotics project will reportedly be led by Marc Whitten, a former GM executive who previously worked on Cruise, the now-defunct robotaxi initiative. Additionally, Meta is said to be hiring around 100 engineers this year to support the effort.

Meta’s Expanding AI & Robotics Investments

In recent years, Meta has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into Reality Labs, responsible for products like the Quest VR headset and Ray-Ban smart glasses. For 2025, Meta is planning to invest $65 billion into similar AI-powered products and robotics infrastructure.

While Meta’s humanoid robots may still be years away from launch, the company’s move into AI-powered robotics signals a new phase of its technological ambitions.
